When at home at the Camp Nou, FC Barcelona are favorites to win against any team in the world. It was always going to be a tall order for AC Milan to go away to Barcelona and get a result. Despite that, AC Milan has an extremely strong squad that proved their credentials as an elite team in the 2010-11 season, winning the Scudetto. Their talent, previous form, depth, and the tactical acumen of their manager should give them a chance to get a result in theory.
Unfortunately for them, one of those key assets - depth - has been taken away from them. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho, Phillipe Mexes, Mathieu Flamini and Gennaro Gattuso are all unavailable. Taye Taiwo is coming back to fitness but is not expected to start. Most of Max Allegri's big decisions have already been made for him. Pato and Antonio Cassano will start up front, while Thiago Silva and Alessandro Nesta will start in the back.
Still, Allegri could alter the game with his midfield selections. Unless Allegri pulls a rabbit out of his hat and decides to play some odd variation on a 4-3-3/4-5-1 setup, he has to pick four of these men to play in midfield: Mark Van Bommel, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Clarence Seedorf, Alberto Aquilani, Antonio Nocerino and Massimo Ambrosini. All of them present very different options, and based on his game plan, Allegri could conceivably pick any four of them. It sounds like strength in depth, but the leadership of Gattuso, as well as the athleticism of Flamini will be sorely missed.
The world expects a Barca win on Tuesday night, while Max Allegri likely expects otherwise. If he had a full squad available, the world might believe in his team's ability to get a result.
Rob Alexander finds some great value bets in the first matchday of the Champions League group stage
Facts and stats ahead of this evening's Champions League game at Camp Nou where defending champions FC Barcelona play host to AC Milan (19:45 BST kick-off).
- Defending champions Barcelona have met AC Milan nine times in the Champions League (and European Cup) prior to tonight. Barca have won four of those games, Milan have won three and the other two ended in a draw.
- Barcelona have scored in their last 21 Champions League games, with the Catalans finding the net in every game since they drew a blank against Rubin Kazan in November 2009.
- Milan have failed to score in their last three Champions League games and will set an unwanted record if they fail to score tonight as they have never gone four games without a goal in European competition.
- Milan travel to Camp Nou having won just two of their last 13 Champions League games.
- Both of those wins came against Auxerre.
- Barcelona have scored 82 goals in 38 games since Pep Guardiola took charge in 2008.
- Lionel Messi has played a major part in Barca's success, with the Argentina international have been the outright top scorer in each of the last three seasons. His 12 goals in last season's Champions League came after he scored eight in the 2009/10 season and nine in 2008/09.
The Champions League kicks of Tuesday night with teams from Group E to H playing their matches first. FC Barcelona v AC Milan is a particularly stand-out tie as well as Arsenal and Chelsea both in action against dangerous German opposition. With some profits from last weekend's domestic action there are plenty of potentially lucrative bets this Tuesday.
Arsenal face a tough trip to German champions Borussia Dortmund but will be happy to have got their first Premier League win at home to Swansea City at the weekedn. The Gunners will be looking to build some momentum with a good performance and result in Dortmund. The Germans will have to up their game quite a bit to get a positive result after a shock home defeat to Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga. Olympiakos host Olympique Marseille in the other fixture in this group.
Former Chelsea player Michael Ballack is making a return to Stamford Bridge with his current side Bayer Leverkusen and will be hoping to make a big impact on his return. Chelsea have started the season well and are looking to be in the mix with both Manchester sides in the title race. The Blues have come near to a Champions League win on a number of occasions and Andre Villas-Boas men will be full of desire to go one step further than they have managed before. Bayer Leverkusen have also started their Bundesliga campaign well and look like challenging for a Champions League spot again. Racing Genk of Belgium take on Valencia in the other opening match in this group.
Of the other matches this Tuesday, FC Porto v Shakhtar Donetsk looks a close call in one of the most evenly matched groups, which also contains APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus and Russian side Zenit St Petersburg. All the sides in this group will feel they have a chance of qualifying for the next round and they will certainly rack up the air miles as the group progresses.
FC Barcelona v AC Milan sees two giants of the European game do battle at the Camp Nou. In the same group as Barcelona and Milan are Viktoria Plzen and BATE Borisov who play in the Czech Republic on Tuesday. Those two sides are likely to be battling out for a Europa League spot at the end of qualifying.
Tuesday Picks :- Borussia Dortmund v Arsenal
Borussia Dortmund have struggled to hit top gear so far this season in the Bundesliga and are already off the pace of Bayern Munich as they bid to defend their German Championship without talismanic midfield player Nuri Sahin, who was sold to Real Madrid for a measly €12m.
Arsenal are faring even worse than their German rivals, with only one win in the Premier League this season and a humiliating defeat at the hands of Manchester United still fresh in the memory. A win over Swansea at the weekend did something to erase that but the performance was hardly vintage Arsenal.
There was a hint of desperation in Arsenal's last minute signings at the end of the summer transfer window and Arsene Wenger will be hoping they gel quickly, otherwise a similar performance to that against Swansea will see them lose to superior opposition away from home like Borussia Dortmund.
It is true that Dortmund aren't in great form either, but I fancy them to still have too much for the new look Arsenal side, pieced together at the last minute. The German side will be more determined than ever to please their amazing fans with a good run in the Champions League, a tournament they won in 1997.
Bet 3 points on Borussia Dortmund -0.75 at 2.3 with Victor Chandler. - FC Porto v Shakhtar Donestk
An intriguing tie at Estadio do Dragao sees last season's Europa League champions FC Porto take on Shakhtar Donetsk in Group G. The group may be one of the toughest to call in the whole tournament as it also contains Zenit St Petersburg and APOEL Nicosia.
There will be a lot of Brazilian flair on show in this match as both sides rely on the attacking attributes of players like Hulk and Kleber (FC Porto) and Willian, Jadson and Luiz Adriano (Shakhtar Donestk) so the match has the potential to be full of goals.
FC Porto are heavy favourites for the match in the regular match result betting and I do fancy them to win the match but it could easily be a draw. Shakhtar will cause the Portuguese side problems and with their experienced defence which includes Darijo Srna, Razvan Rat and Dmytro Chygrynskiy they will be tough to break down.
For that reason I'm backing Shakhtar Donetsk with a small head start.
Champions League football returns to the Camp Nou this Tuesday evening as Barcelona play host to AC Milan in a match that pits the two titans of Group H against one another. Drawn in a group that includes two of this season’s minnows, Belarus’s BATE Borisov and Viktoria Plazen from the Czech Republic, Barcelona and Milan will no doubt view this season’s opener as an opportunity to stake an early claim for top spot in the group. Both teams enter the match on the back of a poor result on the weekend, each having played to a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad and Lazio, respectively. Both teams enter Tuesday’s match with injuries in defence and attack, but the biggest piece of news coming out of the Rossoneri camp is the last-minute loss of striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to an abductor injury picked up in training. Despite the absence of Gerard Piqué and Alexis Sánchez the Catalans will look to begin the defense of their Champions League crown in style in front of what is sure to be a packed Camp Nou.
Conducted under the watchful eyes of a handful of Barcelona stars, including a bemused looking Carles Puyol dressed as though caught out on his way to training, the Champions League draw for Group H has brought about a mouth watering opener. The history between these two sides is bitter: a humiliating 4-0 loss in the 1994 final of the same tournament sent shockwaves through the footballing world, as a heavily favored Barcelona side was swept aside by a Rossoneri tide that seemed unstoppable. That Barcelona team included Txiki Bergiristain and a young Guardiola, both of whom must be keen on some sort of personal revenge (although it’s hard to imgagine the Catalan coach holding on to a decades old grudge).
Like that game seventeen years ago, this Milan side enters Tuesday’s match riddled with injuries: the last minute loss of Ibrahimovic robs the Culé faithful of an opportunity to provide a personalized “welcome back” to the player that so publicly rebuked Guardiola’s style of coaching, while Robinho and new signing Philippe Mexès also remain sidelined. An interesting side note is the absence of Filippo Inzaghi: “the poacher” has been a constant prescence for AC Milan since his arrival from Juventus in 2001, and his exclusion from the squad likely signals the end of his long and prolific Champions League career. A moment of recognition is warranted for the man who Alex Ferguson once famously quipped was “born offside”.
Barcelona also open their Champions League campaign with a number of worrying injuries. Defender Gerard Piqué continues to remain unavailable, while the loss of Alexis Sánchez at Anoeta on the weekend means that Guardiola’s recent experimentation with a 3-4-3 system is likely to resort back to the more familiar 4-3-3.
What, then, for the lineups? Dani Alves should slot into his comfortable spot at right back, while I think that Guardiola will start Puyol alongside Abidal in the middle of the back four; Busquets doesn’t really do himself any favors when moved from his normal position above the defense, and this match represents a perfect opportunity for the Catalan captain to reintegrate back into the squad. Adriano should round things out in the left back position, while I expect to see the normal Xavi-Busquets-Iniesta trio start in the midfield. The attack should be similarly familiar, with the infallible Villa-Messi-Pedro trio on the hunt against a Milan back four that allowed two goals in the opening twenty five minutes against Lazio on Friday. In a game that could set an early precedent in the fight for the top spot in Group H I expect the Catalans to come out with all cylinders firing. No reason to leave any doubt about who is in charge this season.
FC Barcelona: Valdés, Dani Alves, Puyol, Abidal, Adriano, Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta, David Villa, Pedro, Messi
For AC Milan a number of changes should be made from the side the was almost embarrassed against Lazio (or was embarrassed, depending on who you speak with). Abbiati will start in goal, while Ignazio Abate, the stalwart Alessandro Nesta, Luca Antonini and the exciting Thiago Silva will be the back four. The midfield should see a few changes from last Friday’s disappointment, with former Barcelona player Mark Van Bommel starting in place of the injured Gennaro Gattuso. He should be surrounded by new signing Alberto Aquilani (who is surely keen to impress in the hopes that his season-long loan from Liverpool becomes permanent), with Kevin Prince Boateng and the impressive Antonio Nocerino rounding things out in midfield. In attack coach Massimiliano Allegri now faces a conundrum: the sudden loss of Ibrahimovic and continued absence of Robinho means that he will be forced to pair Alexander Pato with Antonio Cassano, who he had decreed would be dropped in favor of a Pato-Ibrahimovic pairing up top. Awkward times in the dressing room, no doubt (expect Cassano, the bad boy of the football world, to walk around with a “this is what you get” smirk all evening).
AC Milan: Abbiati, Abate, Nesta, Antonini, Thiago Silva, Van Bommel, Aquilani, Nocerino, Boateng, Cassano, Pato
Time for a prediction then: Both teams enter the match Tuesday with something to prove, although in the case of Barcelona it’s hard to feel as though the current title holders are in any danger of an early capitulation. A draw on the weekend leaves the Catalans needing a solid performance against the Italian side to boost morale, but a raucous Camp Nou and a somewhat shell shocked Milan side point towards a solid victory. Kevin Prince Boateng’s comment on Sunday that “…Ibrahimovic is Milan’s brain” doesn’t bode well for the Rossoneri now that he is unavailable, and coach Allegri’s muted comments that “…tomorrow is not a final, it’s the first game of the round. It’s against a team who have recently won a lot but our goal is to go through” seem like the words of a man who would be happy with a draw at the Camp Nou.
